Rental Car Coverage with Credit Cards
Last reviewed: April 2026
Most credit cards include some rental car damage coverage when you decline the counter waiver and pay with the card. Limits, primary vs secondary status, and excluded vehicles vary widely — here's how to know what you actually have.
Coverage across 155 audited cards: 91 include rental car coverage · 25 offer primary CDW · typical max rental duration is 31 days.
CDW/LDW basics
91 of 155 cards Norte audits include some form of rental car damage coverage — collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver (LDW). Coverage applies when you decline the rental company's own waiver and pay for the rental in full with the eligible card.
Typical limits across premium cards: vehicle value capped at $50,000–$75,000 (some go higher), rental duration limited to 31 days (some US cards limit domestic rentals to 15 days), with country exclusions for high-risk regions. Excluded vehicles commonly include exotics, motorcycles, RVs, cargo vans, antiques, and trucks above a certain weight.
Primary vs secondary — and why it matters
Only 25 of 91 cards with rental coverage offer primary CDW. Primary means your card pays first, without you needing to file with your personal auto insurance. With secondary coverage, you must file with your own insurer first; the card covers what's left (typically your deductible and any uncovered amount).
Several US cards offer hybrid status: secondary in your home country, primary internationally. Citi Strata Elite, Marriott Bonvoy Boundless, and several airline co-brands work this way. Always check your card's specific designation before relying on it.
Liability is almost always separate
Credit card CDW covers damage to the rental vehicle itself. It does not cover third-party liability — injuries or damage to other people, other vehicles, or property. In the US, your personal auto insurance liability typically extends to rentals; abroad, it usually doesn't. If you have no personal auto policy, you'll need to buy supplemental liability from the rental company or a standalone policy.

How to activate coverage at the counter
Decline the rental company's CDW/LDW. Pay for the entire rental with the eligible card. Be the primary renter named on the agreement. Keep the rental agreement, your card statement showing the full charge, and photos of the vehicle's condition at pickup and return.
Common questions
- Does my credit card cover liability if I hit another car?
- Almost always no. Credit card CDW covers damage to the rental vehicle only. Third-party liability requires your personal auto insurance (which usually extends to rentals in your home country) or supplemental liability bought from the rental company.
- What vehicles aren't covered?
- Common exclusions: exotic cars, motorcycles, RVs, cargo vans, antique vehicles (typically 25+ years old), trucks above a certain weight, and any vehicle exceeding the card's MSRP cap. Some cards also exclude rentals over 28 or 31 days, and rentals in countries like Israel, Jamaica, Ireland, or Northern Ireland.
- Is my coverage primary or secondary?
- Most cards offer secondary coverage. Only 25 of 91 cards Norte audits offer primary coverage. Several US cards are secondary domestically but primary when you rent abroad. Check your card's benefit guide for the exact designation.
- Do I have to be the primary renter?
- Yes. The card you're using must be in the name of the primary renter listed on the rental agreement. Additional drivers are typically not covered unless they're a spouse or domestic partner specifically named.
