Extended Warranty from Credit Cards
Last reviewed: April 2026
Many credit cards extend the manufacturer's warranty on eligible items you bought with the card — typically by an additional 1 to 2 years. The benefit kicks in only after the original warranty expires.
Coverage across 155 audited cards: 68 include extended warranty · most common extension is +1 year · top extension on select cards is +2 years.
How extended warranty works
68 of 155 cards Norte audits include an extended warranty benefit. The standard extension on US cards is 1 additional year on top of an eligible US manufacturer warranty of 3 to 5 years or less. A smaller group of cards — including HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard, Citi Double Cash, Citi AAdvantage Executive, and AAdvantage Globe — extend by up to 24 additional months, effectively doubling shorter warranties.
Coverage activates only after the original manufacturer warranty expires. It generally mirrors the terms of that original warranty: if the manufacturer would have covered a defect, your card extension will too. It's not a separate damage or accident policy.
Popular cards compared
- Chase Sapphire Reserve (US): +1 year on eligible US manufacturer warranties of 3 years or less. $10,000 per claim · $50,000 per account.
- HSBC Elite World Elite Mastercard (US): Doubles the original warranty up to +24 months — among the longest extensions on a US card. $10,000 per claim.
- Citi Double Cash (US): No-annual-fee card that adds up to +24 additional months. $10,000 per claim.
- American Express Platinum (US): +1 year on US manufacturer warranties of 5 years or less. $10,000 per item · $50,000 per card/year.
Eligibility and limits
The item must be purchased entirely with the eligible card. Per-claim limits on US premium cards are typically $10,000 per item with $50,000 per card per year. The original manufacturer warranty must be a US warranty (or in some cases the local market warranty) — store warranties, third-party service plans, and dealer warranties usually don't qualify.
Common exclusions: motorized vehicles, computer software, used or refurbished items, items used for business or commercial purposes (on consumer cards), and items with original warranties longer than the card's cap.
How to file a claim
Start the claim before the extended period ends, ideally as soon as the issue appears. You'll need: the original receipt showing the card payment, the manufacturer's warranty document showing the original term, proof that the original warranty has expired, and a description of the defect. Most issuers use Sedgwick, AIG, or Allianz.
Common questions
- How much extra warranty time do I actually get?
- Most cards add 1 additional year on top of eligible manufacturer warranties of 3 to 5 years or less. A handful of cards — HSBC Elite, Citi Double Cash, Citi AAdvantage Executive, and AAdvantage Globe — extend by up to 24 additional months.
- Does extended warranty cover accidental damage?
- No. Extended warranty mirrors what the manufacturer's original warranty would have covered — typically defects in materials and workmanship. Accidental damage and theft fall under purchase protection, which is a separate benefit with its own coverage window (usually 90–120 days from purchase).
- What disqualifies an item?
- Common disqualifiers: paying with a non-eligible card or splitting payment, items with original warranties longer than the card's cap, motorized vehicles, software, used or refurbished items, store or dealer service plans, and items used for business on a consumer card.
- When should I file the claim?
- File as soon as the issue appears, and always before the extended coverage period ends. Most cards require notice within 30 to 90 days of the failure.
